One nation, two sides, one corner.Bulgaria, a Eurasian nation was born through the merging of Turkic and Slavic inhabitants of the region in the late 7th Century, forming its first state. Centuries ahead, the nation struggled with the Byzantine empire to assert its independence, and was later dominated by the Ottoman Turks, finally gaining its ultimate freedom in 1908. Nowadays, the nation has a stable economy and is a standard player in foreign relations, being part of NATO and the EU.
Bulgaria entered World War I in October 11th 1915, when its Prime Minister Radoslavov issued a statement in support of the central powers (Germany, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire). The Minister justified such action in the grounds of not only economic reasons, as the other two countries were Bulgaria’s chief partners in trade, but also as a way for the country to defend itself against the aggression of Serbia, the Russian ally and major power in the Balkans that Radoslavov considered to be his country’s “greatest foe.” More on the detailed background information can be found on our "The Story" Page.
